CBSE Resets Exam Pattern – SAs & FAs Lose Importance
CBSE, the Central Board of Secondary Education is popular for being dynamic. From introducing significant developments in academic learning to making paradigm changes in exam patterns, it has consistently worked to raise standards of education from time to time.
The board has unveiled a new exam format for Class VI to X that is very different from earlier formats. For 2017-18 academic year, the existing practice of evaluating a student’s performance using CCE scheme will be junked and replaced with something better.
The recent developments:
No weightage of SAs – Abbreviated as Summative Assessments, SAs refer to, the assessment of a student’s involvement in educational program based on the performance ‘during’ the particular time-period and the exam that is conducted at the end of the assessment. Each academic year had 2 SAs: SA1 and SA2, where each of them had a weightage of 30 percent, in the final score. SAs will be replaced with two ‘Terminal’ exams, and their scores will not carry forward.
No more FAs – Formative Assessments or FAs comprise of a range of formal and informal assessments that are based on written as well as non-written test components. There were 4 FAs: FA1, FA2, FA3, FA4, which coexisted with SA1 and SA2. FA’s had 10% weightage, in final score. They are scrapped totally.
CCE scheme dropped – CBSE schools will not be following the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation or CCE scheme for classes VI to X. Under the CCE scheme, co-scholastic activities were taken into account. But, that is no longer the case.
Implementation of “Uniform System of Assessment” – From now on, CBSE will be implementing a system that will remove the disparity created when students migrate from one school to another. Earlier, different CBSE-affiliated schools issued different kinds of report cards, due to different assessments. But from now on, a uniform system will be in place, where one singular examination and scoring pattern will be followed by every school.
2 Terminal Exams – Term exams that cover one half portion of syllabus will be conducted twice in an academic year. This will presumably help students in evaluation and getting ready for the final exam that includes 100% of the portion. However, no percentage of their scores from these exams, will be added to the final exam score.
No cumulative scores – In earlier system, a percentage of scores secured in every exam was considered for final result. New system will not be following this practice.
Final exam compulsory for VI to IX – As per the new pattern, students have to appear for the final exam that will cover 100 percent of the syllabus. The final exam will carry a weightage of 80 percent, while internal assessment carries 20 percent weightage.
Board exam compulsory for class X – For students in tenth class, Board exams were not mandatory earlier and students had the option of taking annual exam conducted by school. This has been scrapped and annual board exam will be compulsory for all CBSE-affiliated schools.
The above will be implemented 2017-18 academic year onwards.

1. How would you distinguish the Uniform Assessment System from CCE?
Under CCE scheme, 60 percent of assessment was based on written exams and 40 percent on co-scholastic activities that include disciplines like sports, art, sincerity, behavior, etc. Under Uniform assessment on the other hand, 90 percent of assessment is based on pen-n-paper exams.
2. What is the passing score now?
The passing marks for any exam will be 33%.
The new system is aimed at making students more competitive and exam-ready for courses that come after class X. Learning after class X takes a giant leap and students often find it difficult to adopt. The current changes in exam pattern for CBSE, which also increases the number of chapters to study for final exam, are indeed the right steps for standardizing teaching and preparing the student better, for future.
